Company
The app is the proof. The technology is the company.
TrailAware, Inc. builds patented AR geospatial navigation. The strategy is explicit: prove the technology at scale with a consumer app people love, then license the pipeline everywhere a person or machine needs to see a path drawn on the real world.
One patent, one working pipeline
US Patent 11,480,441 B2, “Systems and methods for trail visualization using augmented reality” — granted October 25, 2022, priority date August 20, 2020, term active through March 2041. The claims cover the full server-to-device pipeline for rendering navigable routes as AR overlays anchored to real-world coordinates, with real-time recalculation and offline caching. The embodiment is trails; the claims generalize to any AR-rendered geospatial route on a mobile or wearable device.
Server-side 3D routes
Geospatial reference points become compressed polylines, enriched with interpolated elevation — a queryable 3D route database built for AR delivery.
On-device AR rendering
Geodetic coordinates convert to cartesian space around the user; the route renders on the live camera and recalculates continuously from GPS and IMU.
Offline by design
Routes cache locally, so the overlay works with zero connectivity — backcountry, industrial, or defense settings.
Other industries already cite this patent
Cited five times since grant — and the citations are the story: they come from outside outdoor recreation.
Qualcomm
Cited in an AR/XR localization filing. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon platforms power most consumer AR/XR devices and a growing share of automotive AR HUD systems.
Liebherr Aerospace
Cited in an industrial AR maintenance filing (locating leaks in aircraft supply networks) — direct evidence of relevance in aerospace MRO.
Vehicle AR display (int’l)
Cited in an international vehicle AR display filing — the defense and automotive HUD category referencing the same claims.
Case studies: proven in the field
Not a paper patent. The pipeline has shipped at the sport’s most demanding venues.
Flagship event · 2019
Red Bull Rampage
Challenge. Red Bull invited TrailAware to showcase its technology at Rampage — freeride lines down a Utah cliff face that spectators and production can barely read from a distance, with under a month to prepare.
What we did. Mapped rider lines and rendered them in AR on the actual venue terrain after a week of on-site testing. Strava granted elevated API access to support the deployment.
Outcome. A working AR line on the sport’s most extreme terrain, delivered on an event deadline.
“Less than a month from Red Bull’s call to AR lines on a Rampage cliff.”
Race series
Over the Hump
Challenge. A recurring Orange County race series where riders need to know the course before they race it.
What we did. AR course visualization across the series — the route line drawn on the terrain in front of competitive riders, week after week.
Outcome. Sustained, repeat field use through a full season format, with a live feedback loop from demanding riders.
“The AR course line, raced week after week.”
Bike park
Skypark Bike Park
Challenge. Bike-park guests on an unfamiliar trail network, deciding at every junction whether they’re on the right run.
What we did. Demoed on-site AR trail wayfinding on the park’s own trails.
Outcome. The working model for the resort partner program now in development.
“The blueprint for the resort partner program.”
