From map data to a line on the mountain

US Patent 11,480,441 B2 covers the full pipeline — server-side 3D route generation and device-side AR rendering. The embodiment is trails; the claims generalize to any AR-rendered geospatial route on a mobile or wearable device. Here is how it works, end to end.

Server side - building 3D routes

  1. Geospatial reference pointsTrail geometry is ingested as sequences of geospatial reference points from map data.
  2. Compressed polylinesRoutes are encoded as compressed polylines - compact enough to sync and cache at scale.
  3. Elevation enrichmentEach route is enriched with elevation data, interpolated between samples for a continuous 3D profile.
  4. 3D trail databaseThe result: a queryable database of 3D routes ready for AR delivery - 15,000+ US trails today.

Device side - rendering on reality

  1. Geodetic → cartesian conversionRoute coordinates convert to a cartesian frame relative to the user's position.
  2. Location nodes & route overlayLocation nodes anchor a cylindrical route overlay onto the live camera view.
  3. Continuous recalculationGPS and IMU input drive continuous recalculation, keeping the overlay aligned as the user moves.
  4. Offline cachingRoutes, elevation, and basemap are cached on the device - the pipeline runs with zero connectivity.

What the app adds on top of the patent

Positioning fusion

A proprietary layer fuses GPS with ARKit visual-inertial odometry. GPS gives absolute position; the camera and IMU give short-term precision. Fused, they hold the overlay to the terrain without the drift that breaks naive GPS-anchored AR.

Tracer rendering

The route draws as a Metal-rendered glowing line with animated direction pulses - think golf-shot tracer, tuned for navigation - color-coded by trail difficulty. It reads instantly at a glance, in daylight, at speed.

Why it’s defensible

  • Scope. US Patent 11,480,441 B2, “Systems and methods for trail visualization using augmented reality,” granted October 25, 2022. Claims cover the server-to-device pipeline: 3D route generation from geospatial data and AR rendering relative to the user.
  • Term. Active through March 2041.
  • Citation profile. Cited five times since grant — by Qualcomm (AR/XR localization), Liebherr Aerospace (industrial AR maintenance), an international vehicle AR display filing, and a geospatial computation filing. Other industries already reference this patent.
  • Reference implementation. The TrailAware iOS app ships the full pipeline in production - not a paper patent.

Where the pipeline applies

Trails are the working proof. The claims cover any geospatial path drawn on a live camera or AR display — wherever a person or machine needs to see a route on the real world, including fully offline.

Automotive & HUD navigation

The route drawn on the road ahead, through the windshield.

AR glasses & XR platforms

Anchored wayfinding for headsets and glasses — Qualcomm’s citation is the proof point.

Heavy equipment & construction

The dig line drawn on the ground for the operator — Liebherr’s citation shows the industrial pull.

Ski & snow resorts

Runs, boundaries, and lift lines drawn on the mountain for guests.

Marine & waterways

The channel drawn on the water — harbor approaches and no-wake zones in view.

Aviation & drones

The flight path drawn in the sky for pilots and drone operators.

Golf

Your line drawn on the fairway, from tee to pin.

Utilities & infrastructure

Buried lines and service routes visualized on site before the shovel hits dirt.

Aerospace & MRO

Guided inspection and maintenance paths rendered on the equipment itself.

Agriculture

Row and path guidance drawn over the field for operators and machines.

Defense & training

Patrol routes and objectives rendered offline, where connectivity is not an option.

Tourism & venues

Heritage walks, campus wayfinding, and event routes drawn on the real world.
